What anxiety actually is, and why avoidance feeds it

A plain explanation of the anxiety cycle, why relief from avoiding things is temporary, and what treatment looks like.
Anxiety is your threat-detection system doing its job too often and too loudly. It is not a character flaw, and it is not something you can simply reason away in the moment.
The cycle is predictable. A situation feels risky — a presentation, a matatu ride, a phone call. Your body surges. You avoid or escape. Relief arrives fast, and your brain records a lesson: that thing was dangerous, and avoiding it worked. The circle of what feels safe shrinks a little each time.
Treatment works in the opposite direction. We build tolerance gradually, in steps you choose, while learning skills to keep the body regulated — paced breathing, grounding, and realistic appraisal of what is actually likely to happen.
Most people notice change within six to ten sessions. What we are aiming for is not a life without anxiety, but a life where anxiety stops choosing for you.
